Who is Gellert Grindelwald?

Gellert Grindelwald (b. Before July 1882, d. 28 March 1998) was a pure-blooded English/Bulgarian wizard and the darkest and most dangerous Dark Wizard known anywhere in the wizarding world, second only to Lord Voldemort. Just as Voldemort’s main quest was to become immortal, and just as Mad Herpo’s was to experience the darker branches of magic, Grindelwald’s was collect the three Deathly Hallows (the Elder Wand, the Resurrection Stone, and the Cloak of Invisibility), as that would make him the “Lord of Death” and he would be the most powerful wizard of all time in any kind of magic.

In Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them we can learn a little more about him and how he earned the name of The most dangerous Dark Magician of all time.

We know that Grindelwald was an extremist and fanatic who, tired of magical anonymity, decided to start a revolution that put both worlds in danger. But who was he really and why was his relationship with Dumbledore so important?

Considered the most dangerous dark wizard of all time. Before Lord Voldemort, Grindelwald was expelled from Durmstrang for conducting contentious and controversial experiments. With an obsession with the Deathly Hallows (the Invisibility Cloak, Resurrection Stone, and the Elder Wand) and with strong ideals of leading a revolution that will free wizards from Muggle oppression, he forms a close friendship with a even more idealistic Albus Dumbledore.

The friendship comes to an end when Aberforth, Dumbledore’s brother, tired of seeing how his older brother neglected his sister, decides to confront them. The three wizards get into an argument about the illogicality of going after the deathly hallows and dragging a sick girl with them, and Grindelwald casts a cruciatus hex on Dumbledore’s brother. The result of the fight was terrible.

“I don’t know which one of us it was, it could have been any of the three. But the thing is…Ariana was dead.”

With those words, Aberforth tells Harry, Ron, and Hermione how the night he destroyed Dumbledore’s spirit ended and Grindelwald left to achieve his goal.

It is in 1945 that Dumbledore finally confronts Grindelwald and defeats him., and this is how Dumbledore gets the elder wand, which Grindelwald had stolen from its owner, a Bulgarian wandmaker named Gregorovitch. Years later, being a prisoner in a prison that he himself had built at the time of his greatest success, Grindelwald is visited by Voldemort, who demands to know where the elder wand is. Not liking the answer, Voldemort kills him, putting an end to the only wizard who could overshadow him.
