The long-awaited final two episodes of ‘Stranger Things’ Season 4 hit Netflix on 1er July. We take stock for you. Warning, spoilers!
We were warned. On the set of Jimmy Fallon’s American television show, a few days before the release of the end of season 4 of “Stranger Things”, Noah Schnapp, the interpreter of Will Byers, had announced that there will have “deaths” in the finale. The speculations have also kept the fans in suspense, some going so far as to imagine the craziest theories.
Friday, July 1, at 9:01 a.m., the streaming platform finally unveiled episodes 8 and 9, a month after the release of volume 1 of the fourth season. This last salvo of adventures did not leave the public indifferent. On social networks, the outcome of this season has given rise to numerous publications. Many of them lamented the death of a character who in just a few episodes had managed to win the hearts of the public…

The character of Eddie Munson, camped by Joseph Quinn, appeared from the first episode of the season. He also quickly climbed to the top of the fan favorites ranking. The high school student, leader of the Hellfire Club, is quickly taken for the responsibility for the successive deaths of the season. In the final episode, Eddie teams up with Dustin in the Upside Down, while Nancy, Robin and Steve go to Victor Creel’s house. Eddie delivers one of the show’s best moments playing Metallica’s “Master of Puppets.” After this memorable scene, he sacrifices himself to repel the bats, about to kill them, and renounces a return to the real world. After several minutes of fierce fighting, Eddie Munson succumbed, bleeding, to multiple bites, despite Dustin’s late intervention.

Another death did not necessarily sadden the fans. Seen in season 1, Dr. Brenner alias “Dad” for Eleven, made his big comeback in this last season. In camera with the teenager, he tried to help her regain her powers, lost at the end of season 3, by reminding her of traumatic events from her childhood in Hawkins’ laboratory.
We understood precisely at the end of volume 1 that the young girl was for him a way to regain control over the big bad Vecna, also known as Henry and One. The latter was none other than Dr. Brenner’s first patient at the beginning of his experiments. In episode 8, while Eleven tries to escape him, Dr. Brenner is killed by the army, which has come to capture the teenager. This final scene, which takes place in a desert in the western United States, also marks Eleven’s reunion with her boyfriend Mike and his friends Will and Jonathan Byers.
Another secondary character perished in this murderous finale. Remember, in the first episode of season 4 of “Stranger Things”, high school student Chrissy was the first victim of Vecna. This time around, her boyfriend Jason (Lucas’ basketball teammate) is one of the villain’s new victims. He dies cut in half after terrorizing Lucas by threatening to kill him with a gun.
- Vecna, probably not dead
Finally, Vecna, who at first seemed to have been killed by Eleven and by the flames launched by Nancy, would have survived. The very beautiful final scene of the season hints that Hawkins’ last battle will take place in the next and final season.
Another character’s future remains up in the air. Max, who arrived at the start of season 2, has become the key character in the final episodes. In volume 1, its trajectory is associated with the cult title of Kate Bush, “Running Up That Hill”, which had a second life thanks to “Stranger Things”. While she managed to escape Vecna, in the early episodes, their confrontation that occurred in Episode 9 almost killed her.
She suffers almost the same fate as the first deaths of season 4. In the most breathtaking scene of the episode, the teenager’s body begins to crack under the terrified eyes of her boyfriend Lucas. Eleven finally manages to save her, only half put since if physically Max survives, despite fractures, his subconscious is no longer there. We see her for the last time in the hospital, in a coma, surrounded by her friends.

What will become of this character in season 5? It is difficult to know how the little sister of the late Billy will manage to come back to life. But after all, “Stranger Things” always has its share of surprises in store… One thing is certain, the showrunners, the Duffer brothers, already know how the series will end. The script has been ready since the launch of “Stranger Things” in 2016. They also announced that it should start with a time jump. The final episodes could arrive on our screens as early as 2023.
